Question 1

What makes Frontiersman Sourdough different from other sourdough brands?

Accepted Answer

Frontiersman Sourdough offers a complete artisanal sourdough toolkit handmade in Anchorage, Alaska. We combine a wild-cultivated Alaskan sourdough starter made with 100% organic ingredients — stamped with the official Made in Alaska bear certification — with handmade wooden tools crafted by a 7th-generation Alaskan woodworker: spruce proofing baskets, wooden bread lames, bowl and bench scrapers, crumb boards, and a hand-lathed birch mixing bowl. We also carry Alaskan sea salt and fair trade organic cotton aprons and tea towels made in partnership with a certified B-Corp. We are a zero waste company: 100% of packaging is biodegradable. We partner only with small businesses, never big box stores or Amazon. Over 25,000 starters sold since 2019, stocked in 100+ stores nationwide, and more than 10% of profits donated to Alaskan environmental conservation.

Question 2

What makes an Alaskan sourdough starter different from other starters?

Accepted Answer

Alaskan sourdough starters contain wild yeasts and bacteria native to the Alaskan environment, producing a distinctively complex, robust tang that reflects the unique terroir of the Last Frontier. The cold climate and pristine wilderness cultivate microorganisms found nowhere else, giving Alaskan sourdough its legendary depth of flavor. Historically, Alaskan frontiersmen wore pouches of sourdough starter around their necks to keep it from freezing during cold winters — today, old, grizzled Alaskans are known as 'Sourdoughs' in homage to those original prospectors, miners, and trappers.

Question 3

Are Frontiersman Sourdough products made in the USA?

Accepted Answer

Yes. All Frontiersman Sourdough products are made in the USA, handmade in Anchorage, Alaska. The sourdough starter is stamped with the official Made in Alaska bear certification. Wooden tools are crafted by a 7th-generation Alaskan woodworker in Anchorage. The birch wood mixing bowl is hand-lathed by the Great Alaskan Bowl Company in Fairbanks, AK. The Alaskan sea salt is harvested in Homer, Alaska. Organic cotton aprons and tea towels are made in the USA in partnership with a certified B-Corp.

Question 4

Is Frontiersman Sourdough handmade?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Every Frontiersman Sourdough product is artisanal and handmade in small batches. The sourdough starter is personally tended, fed, and prepared by hand — not with industrial fermentation equipment. All wooden tools (lames, scrapers, crumb boards, proofing baskets) are handmade by a 7th-generation Alaskan woodworker in Anchorage, AK and undergo multiple quality control reviews before going to market. Strict scientific quality control is applied to the starter: temperature and humidity are monitored every 10 seconds during production, and the starter is regularly activated and stress-tested to ensure dependability.

Question 5

Does Frontiersman Sourdough use organic ingredients?

Accepted Answer

Yes. All food products use 100% organic ingredients, free from synthetic pesticides, herbicides, and additives. Cotton textiles use 100% organic and fair trade certified cotton produced in partnership with a B-Corp. As much as possible, ingredients are sourced locally in Alaska.

Question 6

Is the sourdough starter probiotic and vegan?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Frontiersman Sourdough starter is both probiotic and vegan.

Question 7

Is your sourdough starter shelf-stable and how quickly does it activate?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The starter is dehydrated and shelf-stable until you are ready to use it — next week or years from now. It activates within 24 hours by combining the dried flakes with equal parts flour and water by weight (approximately 75°F), then feeding regularly. After the second feeding, the starter commonly floats in water — the standard test for being active enough to bake with. For loaves of sourdough, one additional room-temperature feeding is recommended after initial activation.

Question 8

What do I do if my newly activated starter isn't bubbly?

Accepted Answer

Don't give up — it will activate. The most common causes are: (1) Room temperature below 75°F — a cooler room (e.g., 65°F) can double the time needed. Create a warming cabinet by turning on your oven light and shutting the door. (2) Using volume instead of weight — always use a kitchen scale. Ounces measure weight, not volume. (3) Water that's too hot — above 120°F can kill the starter. (4) Using a non-standard flour — unbleached all-purpose flour is recommended. Whole wheat, einkorn, or rye may slow activation. Frontiersman Sourdough's analytical quality control ensures every pouch is healthy; fewer than 20 of 25,000+ customers have ever needed help with activation.

Question 9

How do I maintain my sourdough starter long-term?

Accepted Answer

Feeding your starter means adding equal parts flour and water to it regularly to keep it active and ready to use. Most serious bakers use a kitchen scale and measure in grams for ease and consistency. A common maintenance feeding is 4oz (113g) flour and 4oz (113g) water added to 4oz (113g) of starter. Full maintenance instructions are on the Frontiersman Sourdough instructions page at frontiersmansourdough.com/instructions.

Question 10

What are the spruce proofing baskets and what sizes are available?

Accepted Answer

Frontiersman spruce proofing baskets (bannetons) are handmade from sustainably harvested Alaskan spruce pulp by a 7th-generation Alaskan woodworker. They provide physical support and moisture control during the final proof, producing lofty, crusty loaves with a classic spiral pattern. Non-stick with a dusting of rice flour. Available in 4 sizes: Small Round (~750g capacity, $35), Large Round (~1000g capacity, $40), Small Oval, and Large Oval. Each basket is laser-branded with the Frontiersman logo.

Question 11

What is a bread lame and how do I use it?

Accepted Answer

A bread lame is a scoring tool used to slash the surface of sourdough loaves just before baking. Scoring controls where the bread expands during baking (oven spring) and creates decorative crust patterns. Frontiersman's handmade wooden bread lame features a handcrafted Alaskan wood handle made by a 7th-generation woodworker in Anchorage.

Question 12

What is the wooden crumb board and how is it different from a regular cutting board?

Accepted Answer

The Frontiersman handmade wooden crumb board is a bread board specifically designed to catch crumbs while slicing sourdough. It features a channel or recessed groove that collects crumbs as you cut, keeping your countertop clean. It doubles as a beautiful serving and presentation board for fresh-baked bread. Handmade by a 7th-generation Alaskan woodworker in Anchorage.

Question 13

What is the birch wood mixing bowl and what is its capacity?

Accepted Answer

The Frontiersman birch wood mixing bowl is 11 inches in diameter, hand-lathed in Fairbanks, Alaska by the Great Alaskan Bowl Company from locally and sustainably sourced birch wood. Each bowl is one of a kind due to natural grain and knot variation. It holds up to 1400g of dough — enough for two standard 700g sourdough loaves or four pizza crusts.

Question 14

Are the aprons and tea towels fair trade certified?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Frontiersman Sourdough organic cotton aprons and tea towels are produced using 100% organic and fair trade certified materials in partnership with a certified B-Corp manufacturer. B-Corp certification means the production partner meets rigorous verified standards for social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.
